Cats of Durban
We are an association of volunteers and NGOs who look after feral and stray cats. Our focus at the moment is to deal with huge numbers of unwanted kittens. Therefore we do advocacy to encourage people to look after their stray and feral populations, we encourage citizens to sterilize their own animals as well as report strays to us, and we trap, neuter and release feral populations. We are all volunteers, who do this work in our time and at our own expense. Our only material cost is the cost of sterilizations. Hundreds of people own cats, but are genuinely unable to afford a full-price spay, and there are also people who are reluctant to spend money on stray animals. So we need to have a fund to pay for these situations where no-one is able, or prepared, to pay for the sterilization. All funds received are used only to pay vets, and our accounts are open for inspection at any time. We are paying R350 per spay or neuter, and a monthly fee will allow us to sponsor sterilizations for people who cannot afford to pay the full rate, or pay for sterilizations for rescued cats. At the moment I have a waiting list of almost 100 cats waiting for funding to be able to sterilize them.
